Jimmy Blewett's Incredible Comeback: From Health Scare to NASCAR Racing (2026)

Life can change in an instant—and for Jimmy Blewett, it almost ended. But today, he’s not just surviving; he’s thriving, back behind the wheel and ready to race with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. His story is a powerful reminder of resilience, gratitude, and the healing power of family, friends, and the thrill of the track. And this is the part most people miss: how a brush with mortality reshapes not just your priorities, but your entire approach to life—and racing.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Jimmy Blewett has every reason to count his blessings. From his loving family to his return to the racetrack at New Smyrna Speedway for the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing, he’s acutely aware of life’s fragility. But what’s most striking? He’s grateful to be alive—a sentiment that hits hard after a harrowing health battle that nearly took everything from him.

Last year, Blewett faced a life-threatening challenge: diverticulitis, a severe inflammation in the digestive tract. This condition led to multiple surgeries and a near-death experience that left the seven-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour winner reflecting on what truly matters. But here’s where it gets controversial: Could this ordeal have been caught earlier? Blewett had been feeling unwell for over a year, yet doctors found nothing—until it was almost too late.

‘It’s been tough,’ Blewett admits. ‘It was a huge test, but I had an incredible support system.’ From his wife and family to the racing community, the outpouring of love was overwhelming. ‘People were checking in daily, making sure I was okay,’ he recalls. Yet, even as he’s fully recovered, there’s a lingering thought: ‘Life can change at any moment.’

The journey began in October 2024, during a trip to North Wilkesboro Speedway. Blewett felt a sharp pain in his lower left side, followed by a fever. ‘I knew something was wrong—I’d never felt pain like that before,’ he says. Diagnosed with diverticulitis, he learned the condition runs in his family—his late brother, John Blewett III, had suffered from it before his tragic passing in 2007. A surgical fix seemed straightforward, but complications arose. ‘They removed the infected piece, but I developed a leak, went septic, and nearly died,’ Blewett explains. What was supposed to be a quick recovery turned into a year-long battle, with multiple surgeries leaving him with a scar from chest to waist.

Through it all, Blewett found inspiration in Modified Tour team owner Tommy Baldwin Jr., who battled cancer in 2023 and is now in remission. ‘He showed me that no matter how bad it gets, you keep fighting,’ Blewett says. ‘He stayed in touch daily, helping me through the darkest times.’

During his recovery, Blewett focused on mentoring his son, James, who’s following in his racing footsteps. But here’s the twist: Jimmy and his wife, Katie, are determined not to let racing consume their son’s life. ‘We want him to experience everything life has to offer,’ Blewett explains. ‘Racing is a huge part of our lives, but it’s not everything. We go camping, we take it slow, and we focus on making memories as a family.’

At 45, Blewett isn’t ready to retire. He made his triumphant return to the Modified Tour on Saturday, piloting the No. 2 Gershow Motorsports Modified—the first of four to six races he plans to enter this year. He’s also eager to help James make his Tour debut later this season. ‘I’m back, I feel great, and this—racing—is the best medicine anyone could ask for,’ he says.

But here’s the question that lingers: In a sport where every second counts, how do we balance the thrill of racing with the fragility of life? And how do we ensure that the next generation, like James, doesn’t lose sight of what truly matters? Share your thoughts below—let’s keep the conversation going.**
