For the TMNT set, we wanted to capture the essence of the Turtles' world while making New York feel fresh and exciting.

The TMNT are all about over-the-top, wild action. Their energy is infectious, and we wanted the art to reflect that. Imagine characters constantly in motion, looking animated and unbalanced. The card titles should sound active and strange, like 'Rad Action' itself. But with great power comes great responsibility. To emphasize the Turtles' coolness, we needed truly dangerous foes. Beating a joke of an opponent doesn't make you a cool hero, so we opted for dire threats, even for characters like Bebop and Rocksteady, who were once comical.
Teenage Fun: The Turtles' Lighthearted Side
Every TMNT incarnation has a balance between 'teenage' and 'ninja.' We wanted to showcase the Turtles' lighter side, their moments of levity and friendship. The franchise has always balanced grim fights with sarcasm and absurdist humor, so we wanted to reflect that in the set. Teenage fun happens in places teenagers can access, like homes, streets, parks, and game stores. The less they're supposed to be there, the more fun it is!
Out After Curfew: A Different Perspective
The final creative guideline was 'out after curfew,' making familiar locations feel eerie or forbidden. Late at night, light isn't omnipresent; it's a blend of sources that can color normal characters and locations into weird, intense wonderlands. A fire escape becomes a balcony, a rooftop a garden, and an alley a dance hall. This guideline adds a layer of mystery and intrigue to the Turtles' New York.
The Result: A Love Letter to Messy New York
By combining these creative guidelines, we created a New York City that looks and feels dramatically different from other sets. It's a New York with graffiti and trash, but also the best damn food you'll ever eat. The basic lands, affectionately nicknamed 'vanish' lands, are a perfect example of this aesthetic. Each one is messy and feels lived in, like the Turtles' New York.
