In January, Tesla's new car registrations in some of its largest European markets revealed a disappointing lack of significant improvement, particularly during this typically low-activity month. While there was a modest uptick in Sweden and Denmark, the numbers in France and Norway took a downturn.
In the heart of Scandinavia, specifically Sweden, Tesla saw an impressive increase of 26%, resulting in 512 vehicles sold, while Denmark experienced a slight growth of 3% with 458 units registered. However, contrasting these positive developments, the company faced a staggering drop of 88% in Norway, where only 83 Teslas were registered. This country is known for its strong loyalty to the Tesla brand and has been a leader in electric vehicle (EV) adoption across Europe. Furthermore, in France, Tesla’s registrations fell by 42%, totaling just 661 vehicles.
Last year, the company responded to market challenges by introducing more affordable versions of its Model Y and Model 3 in both Europe and the United States. This strategy was partly aimed at addressing concerns over an aging product lineup and increasing competition from brands like China’s BYD.
Interestingly, even as the overall sales of battery electric vehicles soared in Europe, Tesla seems to be grappling with retaining its market share. This struggle can be traced back to CEO Elon Musk's controversial political affiliations, notably his support for far-right figures in Europe, which may have impacted public perception of the brand.
